How Does CBD Work?

The popularity of CBD oil, whether extracted from hemp or marijuana, continues to rise in the health and wellness industry. Most attribute this popularity to the vast boom of essential oils in recent years. If you didn’t know, CBD is the second most popular compound found in the cannabis plant, right behind THC. 

Cannabinoids that are derived from the cannabis plant interact with our bodies through the endocannabinoid system (ECS). These cannabinoids bind to receptors and are then broken down by enzymes. These receptors are the stars of the show when it comes to maintaining homeostasis, which is the body's way of maintaining function of its vital systems. Additionally, CBD is known to interact with over 60 other sites in the brain and body! 

Is CBD Safe for Kids With Anxiety? 

Given the current state of research in regards to CBD, it’s hard to give a definitive answer in regards to whether CBD is safe for children or not. However, some researchers believe that children can safely take up to 20 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. Several studies have indicated that negative side effects are uncommon, even in high dosages. 

Additionally, health professionals and researchers have found that CBD has been a highly effective treatment for childhood epilepsy, behavioral conditions, and brain injury in children. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first CBD treatment called Epidiolex, which has been proven to help lessen epileptic seizures in children, and in some cases prevented them altogether. 

What Parents Should Know

Generally, the understanding of CBD absorption is that it varies from user to user. There are many factors that play into absorption rates, and it is still under-researched in regard to the differing effects between adults and children. At this moment, research about children and CBD is still in its infancy, however, there are a few things that parents should consider if determining if CBD is a good fit for their child. 

Read the Labels

One of the most important things to be mindful of is whether or not the CBD is sourced from a reputable brand and source. Currently, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t allow CBD labels to make any claims of treating or curing diseases and conditions. Additionally, you should ensure that the CBD products you are choosing to use offer a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on the company’s website. 

Reputable CBD oil products should have the following information on the product label:

  • Amount of CBD per serving
  • Name of the manufacturer or distributor
  • Directions on how to use the product
  • Whether the product is full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate
  • Batch code (to confirm COA is applicable)

Appropriate Dosing

As mentioned above, each body reacts differently to CBD. It is difficult to make suggestions in regards to dosage for CBD oil for children, so it is best to only administer products that contain CBD with the help of a medical professional. Your medical provider can provide the best insight and guidance to ensure the safety of your child. 

The Options for Children

Generally speaking, children should be given CBD orally — as opposed to adult-use methods such as vaporizing or similar. At this time, the only FDA approved CBD medicine for children ages 2 and older is Epidiolex, so keep this in mind if you are considering a different product for your child.

Additionally, CBD and THC legalities vary from state-to-state. Most states, however, require for those consuming either substance to be 21 years or older. The exception to this are those that are made by physicians and with parents' approval for children younger than 21.
