What is the Difference Between CBD Oil and Hemp Oil?

Understanding CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil

With the growing popularity of cannabidiol (CBD) oil and hemp oil, there are more product options to choose from than ever before. For many people, the biggest issue is figuring out which option is the right one. While CBD oil and hemp oil may sound like the same thing, there is a distinct difference between the two products that’s important to note.

What is Hemp Oil?

In 2018, the Farm Bill finally passed, making industrial hemp production legal as long as the hemp had 0.3 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or less. Thanks to this newly passed legislation, it is now legal to produce hemp on a federal level.

Because of the bill, many companies are rushing to make hemp-infused products. This is especially true in the beauty and wellness markets where hemp seed oil is a popular addition to cosmetics. Hemp oil is also sold in cooking products and health food stores.

Hemp oil is made by putting the seeds through a cold-pressed process. Once this process is done, hemp oil can be used in products ranging from cosmetics to paint and beyond. Hemp oil contains omega fatty acids, Vitamin E, and protein. It is mainly used as a topical solution on skin.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil separates itself from hemp oil by its extraction process and uses. Instead of being extracted from hemp seeds like the hemp oil is, CBD oil is extracted from the entire plant, including the flower, stalks, and stems. CBD is extracted through solvent extraction, CO2 extraction, and even olive oil extraction.

What are the different uses?

The biggest difference is the purpose behind creating the oil and what it is made with. CBD drops are more often ingested and are many times used in conjunction with other natural ingredients to promote relaxation and calming effects. Hemp oil is more often only used topically or as a superfood additive. CBD can also be derived from several different varieties of the cannabis plant, while hemp oil can only be extracted from the hemp variety of Cannabis Sativa and does not contain cannabinoids.

Based on how a product is marketed, it can often be difficult to tell exactly what one is purchasing. After 2018’s Farm Bill passed, many companies began marketing their CBD drops as hemp oil to show the source of the CBD. Because of this, buyers have to carefully read the product description to determine exactly what they are buying before completing a purchase.

What are the Benefits of Each?

Some believe that hemp oil relieves conditions like eczema, acne, rashes, sensitive skin, and psoriasis. It is also considered a superfood for those interested in its culinary merits.

In comparison, CBD has been known to provide relief for a variety of conditions. Many people use it either topically or ingest it, as it is believed that it may help muscle pain, joint pain, and back pain.
