What Type of CBD is the Most Effective?

Figure out which CBD is best for you and your lifestyle.

All CBD is the same, right? Not quite. Although all CBD is derived from hemp—not marijuana—there are different processes it goes through and different forms you can take it in. No matter how you choose to add CBD to your daily routine, one thing is for sure: CBD can help you get the wellness boost you need.

Different Forms of CBD Explained

Not all CBD is created equal. There are three types of CBD, and each one depends on the oil extraction process.

Full-Spectrum CBD

If you see a product made with full-spectrum CBD, this means that the entire cannabis plant was used to get oil. Stalks, leaves, and flowers were all used in the extraction process.  Because the entire plant is used, full-spectrum CBD oil is not purely CBD—it also contains flavonoids, terpenes, and up to 0.3% of THC. Flavanoids and terpenes account for the plant’s fragrance and contain some therapeutic properties

Broad-Spectrum CBD

Broad-spectrum CBD is similar to full-spectrum. It contains CBD, terpenes, and flavanoids. It does not contain THC, which is a psychoactive cannabinoid. Broad-spectrum extraction processes also utilize the whole plant, but the molecular structure is changed to remove the THC.

CBD Isolate

CBD isolate is fully concentrated CBD, without any flavonoids, terpenes, or THC. It comes in a crystalline solid or powder form, different than full-spectrum and broad-spectrum CBD, which are usually used as oils. There is no distinctive taste or smell since it does not contain any flavonoids or terpenes.

How To Choose The Best CBD Product For You?

Many would argue that full-spectrum CBD is best since it contains other compounds (like terpenes and some THC) that could also have some positive effects and health benefits on the body. Think of it as eating an entire salad instead of just picking at some of the salad’s ingredients. Obviously, eating any veggie is better than none at all, but it’s probably best to eat the whole salad. Using full-spectrum CBD is like eating the whole salad.

However, not everyone likes full-spectrum CBD because it contains psychoactive THC. THC is responsible for the feeling of being “high.” Legally, full-spectrum CBD cannot contain more than 0.3% THC. This amount is not enough to make you feel intoxicated or get you “high.” But if you do prefer CBD without THC, broad-spectrum products are a great alternative.

CBD isolate is pure CBD. And since CBD is what interacts with or endocannabinoid system, isolate can still have beneficial effects, although full-spectrum or broad-spectrum CBD might be better.  Ultimately, the best type of CBD  depends on your preference—but if you’re looking to add CBD to your routine, any type is better than none at all.

What Form of CBD is Best to Take?

Once you decide what type of CBD you prefer, you then need to decide which form of CBD is best to take. CBD comes in countless forms, from chocolates and infused drinks to bath bombs and serums. Amongst the wide array of CBD products, there are two main ways to take it: ingesting it or applying it topically. Each one has distinct advantages. Just like CBD type, the form of CBD also depends on preference. Think along the lines of “What am I trying to get out of CBD?”.

When you ingest CBD, it gets broken down and dispersed throughout the bloodstream, connecting with different receptors in the body. This makes ingesting CBD best for aiding in internal conditions, like anxiety, depression, or insomnia. CBD edibles are becoming increasingly popular, driving product variety up. You can choose from powder mix-ins, candy, oil tinctures, and more.

Applying CBD topically is best known for localized pain relief. CBD topicals can help with muscle soreness and stiffness, joint pain, and more, making it a great option for athletes or those with chronic pain conditions like arthritis. CBD topical products are just as varied as CBD edibles. You can choose from lotions, cream, salves, sprays, and more. There are even bath products containing CBD, like bath bombs and salts.
